Elizabeth "Liz" Green Connell

October 28, 1928 — March 9, 2025

Elizabeth “Liz” Green Connell, 96, of Jasper passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Harbor Hospice in Jasper. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Liz was born on October 28, 1928 and was a native of Alabama. She graduated from Dothan High School in 1946 and graduated from the University of Montevallo (Alabama College in those days) in 1950. She received a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Lamar University in 1967 and furthered her post graduate work at Stephen F. Austin State University.

She moved to Texas in 1954 and was a longtime resident and teacher in Port Arthur. She married Jack Connell in 1970 and moved to Jasper in 1973. She was the principal of Trinity Episcopal School for 10 years and was instrumental in building the first addition to the school that housed grades 1st through 5th. She was a teacher in the Jasper Independent School District in 1985 at Parnell Elementary and retired in 1989.

She was a devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and served on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Mother of Mercy Court. She became a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma in 1960, where she served at the local, area, and state level. She was a past member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association and the Texas Retired Teachers Association. A past member of Texas P.T.A., she was a member of the Association for Childhood Education International and Kindergarten Teachers of Texas.

She served her community being a member of the Jasper County Child Welfare Board, serving as a secretary, vice president, and president during her 15 years of membership. She served on the Board of Jasper County Heart Association and was a member of the Women’s Civic Club of Jasper. She served on the Board of Directors for Jasper Community Theatre, where she served two terms as president and then treasurer. She also actively participated in the theatre productions as a director and performer. She was a founding member of the Lakes Area Rose Society, serving as president, secretary-treasurer, and then editor of the monthly newsletter, LaRose. She was a member of the American Rose Society and dedicated time to the Greater Jasper Share Food Pantry, where she served as board member and volunteer.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews that were very special to her. She also leaves behind a host of friends, students, community and church members that she loved.

In lieu of flowers, Liz preferred memorial contributions be given to the Elizabeth Green Connell Scholarship Fund at the University of Montevallo, Department of Elementary Education or to St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Jasper.
